A123 Systems develops lithium iron phosphate battery technology for transportation, grid, and industrial applications.
LFP (lithium iron phosphate) was developed in the US at A123 Systems and East Coast labs, but manufacturing was outsourced to China, which iterated and built IP. Today virtually all LFP cells come from China (some Korean catch-up). Base Power buys cells from China despite doing final assembly, power electronics, and PCBs domestically — a structural dependency they are working to reshore.
